CLUN WALKING GROUPS  There are now three informal walking groups.  Walks take place on Wednesday, year-round and on Monday evenings, June to August (see below).

  • Clun Ramblers for day-long 10+ mile walks

  • Clun Peramblers for 7-8 mile walks, less demanding and slightly slower, and Monday evenings.

  • Clun Amblers for half-day 5-6 mile gentle pace walks, first and third Wednesdays in the month

The assembly point for all the above groups is Clun Memorial Hall Car Park (GR:302811)  Participants in all group walks are invited to make a contribution towards running costs when sharing cars to the start of the walks.  Visitors are welcome to join any of the walking groups.  We are not part of the national Rambles organisation
Sorry: no dogs on walks.

.Clun Ramblers
For Winter all-day walks of 10 miles from September to March assemble at Clun Memorial Hall Car Park at 10 am every Wednesday.  For Summer Walks between April and August, and perhaps a little longer than 10 miles, assembly times are generally 9,30 am but may vary in order to take advantage of the longer days.  This enables us to go further afield and to use public transport (when available).  Contact:: Peter James 01588 640027

Clun Peramblers  Every Wednesday of the year, 7-8 mile walks, less demanding and slightly slower than the Ramblers but somewhat faster than the Amblers.  Assembly at Clun Memorial Hall Car Park at 10 am.  Contact: Jean Smith 01588 640551.  Between June and August the Peramblers offer evening walks of 4-5 miles at a pleasant pace, meeting at 6 pm.

Clun Amblers .  This group is for those who like walking but at a gentle pace, stopping to admire the view or look at interesting flora or fauna, or just those who can't keep up with the pace of the very experienced (and fit) Clun Ramblers., maximum distance 6 miles.   The first and third Wednesdays of every month year-round (weather permitting) starting at 10 am from the Clun Memorial Hall Car park..  For further details contact Maurice Young on 01588 640846.

Clun Parish Paths Partnership
We extend a warm welcome to all walkers.  For easier day-long parking in Clun, walkers should use the 70 space Clun Memorial Hall free car park, at GR:302811, to ease pressure on the essentially short-stay Clun Bridge car park. Please encourage your group leaders and other visiting walkers to use the Memorial Hall.

We like to think that public rights of way in Clun Parish are in reasonable order. Should you find obstructions, damaged stiles or fingerposts, or cross-field paths that have not been re-instated through crops (not grass) when walking anywhere in Shropshire, please report the problem to:

Countryside Access Team,
Shropshire Council,
Shirehall,
Abbey Foregate,

(01743 255055)
,

or to kevin.jones@shropshire.gov.uk   Please quote a grid reference and a description of the location as clearly and detailed as possible.

For the information of leaders, visiting walking groups may, by prior arrangement with Peter James 01588 640027, use the toilets at the Memorial Hall at the start of their walk.  Please note that the hall is used by Parents and Toddlers on every Thursday and therefore for safety reasons the toilets are not available.

Explorer Maps 201 and 216 provide more than adequate coverage of all the walking routes, while 'Clun Walks'  available in Clun provides a selection of 10 local circular  walks.

Other Walking Opportunities
Rail Rambles has now been extended from Mid-Wales and the Marches to cover North, Mid and South Wales.  More information on the programme of Rail Rambles can be obtained from Website. or by phoning Chris Jenkins on 01691 654066 (Mid-Wales Region) or Gwyn Lewis on 029 2090 2633 (North & South Wales Region) or Ramblers Cymru on 029 2064 4308

Long-distance Routes
Clun is just three and a half miles from the Offa's Dyke Path National Trail where it crosses the road to Newcastle-on-Clun at Lower Spoad Farm.  Some local B&B providers offer a pick-up and drop-off service for those walking the Trail.  Three long- distance routes pass through Clun.  The Shropshire Way (recently up-graded) and Wild Edric's Way for walkers and the Jack Mytton Way, Shropshire's own long-distance bridleway.  Just across the Border, Glyndwr's Way starts its journey from Knighton to Machynlleth and back to Welshpool, which is conveniently linked by the Offa's Dyke Path  National Trail with Knighton.  The Offa's Dyke Path and Glyndwr's Way "Where to Stay" (How to get there and other useful information) guide is available from the Offa's Dyke Association at West Street, Knighton, Powys, LD7 1EN email  website: Offa's Dyke Association

The Across Wales Walk is held annually on the first Saturday in September and starts from Clun.  Walkers arrive the previous evening, sleep in Clun Memorial Hall overnight for the early start by coach to the Anchor Bridge on the Wales/England Border on Saturday morning and the 45-mile walk to Clarach Bay on the Welsh Coast just north of Aberystwyth.   For details of this annual event email Stuart Lamb or visit the website Across Wales Walk

Local groups of the Ramblers Association organise walks throughout Shropshire, and beyond, some of which are within easy reach of Clun.  For details of all walks in Shropshire visit Shropshire Ramblers   This website also provides details of often smaller parking places to access the remoter corners of the county.  The East Radnor Branch of the Powys Ramblers, based in Knighton and Presteign, walk between 5 and 8 miles alternate Saturdays.  For diary of walks visit Powys Ramblers
